The following has been copied, almost verbatim, from some advice I gave to a Newbie. I hope you find it interesting.
Well, you're not going to get very far without a bigger ship. And those demo modules are a ticking bomb; your priority should be to replace them as quickly as you can.
If I were you, I wouldn't bother recruiting Crew yet. That will mean that your Life Support and Sick Bay are not essential to replace. Your warp drive, however, is.
Don't blow all your cash on Schools either - you'll pick up skills quickly enough. Of course, when you pick up a decent bit of cash, things will change.
So how do you make money?
Well, several ways of making cash are listed in the Rules, http://tbg.fyndo.com/tbg/Rules.html
Probably the best way to make some money is to do some trading, for which you'll probably want to get yourself a bigger pod. Talk to any friendly-seeming captain you can find, who can probably let you know a profitable trade route nearby. Perhaps you have some medicine on board. The alien's homeworld will pay well for that - if you need to know where it is, then ask.
In fact, that is a general theme; this is a game about talking to (most) people, even if you want to be Fierce. The most valuable commodity is definitely information. Join an alliance. Look for announcements in the Sub Space Times.
Once you have some cash, you should get some practice in fighting with Aliens. WARNING: Aliens fighting at their home world are likely to self-destruct. There are rules that decide this, but in general,it is safe to assume that they'll blow up in your face and do a lot of damage. So try and find aliens away from their home worlds - the uninhabited Stars are good places to look. Incidentally, fighting aliens is a good way to makeEnemies, which in turn is a good source of Fierce favour.
So what kind of ship do you need to fight aliens?Well, that depends on the alien and your preferred fighting style.
Some people like to use Fighters (or similar long-range weapons), with lots of Sensors to ensure they spot enemies while they are still a long way away. They also need Engines to make sure the range staysRemote.
Some people like Rams (and other short-range weapons) with Cloaks and again Engines. This can be a high risk strategy; damage is high at Close and Adjacent range, and you can get badly burnt.
Some people go for something more balanced; cloaks and Medium range weapons can do a lot of damage without needing much Impulse, for example.
But mainly, you should go for what you can afford, and what you can take from the Aliens...
So your priorities should be:
Once you find your alien, feel free to ask if you want any combat tips. Also, ask if you have any questions about my advice - or if there is anything else that you want to know.
